So it turns out that, aside from my childhood scoliosis, some of the pain I’ve been feeling has been caused by sciatica. Phoenix chiropractor Dr Ryan Schulze pointed out to me that this is what causes the tingling feeling, usually in the left part of my body which includes the leg, arm, and part of the hip.

You have no idea how glad I am to finally take the plunge and see a chiropractor…otherwise I’d be spending a small fortune on chili plasters and painkillers, and on doctors who usually write back and muscular pain off as something negligible.

The sort of chiropractic treatment I got from Dr Schulze involved spinal adjustment, which is not as ouchie as it sounds! It just simply realigns certain vertebrae that have been causing nerve irritability—-which is the main reason why I can’t move properly or perform simple functions such as bending over and picking up something I dropped.

I got my first chiropractic treatment for back pain a few days ago…and I’m feeling quite fine! My next appointment is a week from now, and I hope this means the start of a back pain-free life for me at last.

You know that old childhood rhyme that goes “step on a crack, break your mother’s back” which kids chanted as they hop-scotched across sidewalks, avoiding cracks and lines? Well, let’s just say it’s been my mantra since they discovered I have scoliosis at an early age, with my uneven shoulders and poor posture.

Scoliosis runs in my mom’s family, and she had to bear with it as she was growing up because family chiropractic practice was unheard of in Phoenix during her time. And surgery unnerved her, apart from it being so expensive. So my mom and I discussed things over and figured it’s about time to seek a family chiropractor. We asked family and friends for references in the West Phoenix area, and most of them recommended Dr Ryan Schulze.

He tells his personal story of how he became a chiroprator, and what struck me most about it was when his chiropractor mentioned the relationship between his spine, nervous system, and overall health. I must admit to feeling sluggish most of the time, but I’ve always attributed it to low blood pressure.

As for my mom, I really want to get her checked as her back has been giving her constant pain, especially in cold weather. My mom has always been the apprehensive type when it comes to visiting doctors, and I think it’s a great idea that both of us see Dr Schulze together to get diagnosed and then treated.

I started this blog to have readers and other bloggers recommend a good chiropractor they know or go to in Phoenix. I plan to make this a sort of journal with which to chronicle my mom’s and my own back problems. Crossing fingers that we’ll soon be walking tall and be pain-free soon!

Until then, don’t “step on a line, break your mother’s spine!”
